After liberating all of North Africa, the huge allied army and the navy in the southern Mediterranean were now ready for further action. The United States and Britain began to look ahead to the invasion of Europe, and to the final defeat of Germany and the Nazis. At the Casablanca conference in January of 1943, it was decided by Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt to invade Sicily as their next step.
